Beginner’s Guide To Group Training: What To Expect In Your First 30 Days At Activate

Joining a new gym can feel like walking into a new country. Different language. New routines. People who all seem to know what they are doing. At Activate we design your first month so that you feel safe, supported, and clear. This guide shows you exactly what happens from day zero to day thirty so you can focus on making steady progress.

Day Zero: Your Consultation

You book your free consultation and meet a coach for a relaxed chat. We talk goals, medical history, training background, and schedule.

Think of your fitness like a car journey, you don’t just hop in the car and go for a random drive. Your goal is the end destination, this consult is like popping Google Maps in first, you have the best, most efficient route to your destination mapped out in front of you. We build a plan for the inevitable delays and road works you’ll meet en-route, we’ll talk about potential challenges and previous routes you’ve taken, to set YOUR best route. Our No-Sweat Intro consultation is one of the most important steps on your fitness journey, we use it to build a plan that keeps you safe and moving forward.

Week 1&2: One To One Start

Your first four sessions are 1 to 1. You learn how to move safely and effectively, you understand how best to work with a coach and how to set the best foundations for the journey ahead. We teach you how to warm up, how to brace, and how to finish a session feeling like you did something solid without feeling destroyed.

Skills You Learn

  • How to squat and hinge in a way that suits your body right now.
  • How to use barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, and bands safely.
  • How to read the “whiteboard” (we use TV screens now) and find your personal plan for the day.

Week 3: Your First Group Sessions

You join your first classes with your personal plan in hand. The coach greets you by name and checks your scale for the day. You train beside friendly people who remember their first class and will help you settle in.

What Class Feels Like

  • Clear structure. Warm up, main strength focus, and a short conditioning piece.
  • Scaling options laid out. You always have a knee or back friendly choice.
  • Calm pace. You should be able to talk in short sentences during most of the session.

Week 4: Building Confidence

By now you know where the dumbbells live and how to set up a rower. We add small progressions. Maybe a little more range on a squat. A slightly heavier kettlebell. A longer interval on the bike. Nothing extreme. Just clear steps that feel good.

Simple Metrics We Track

  • How many sessions you complete.
  • Which movements feel smoother.
  • Energy and sleep scores from 1 to 10.

Week 4: Your First Review

At the end of the month, we’ll check in on you. We look at your training notes, ask about what felt great, and decide the next small steps. You will leave with a simple plan for the next eight weeks.

(At week 12, (and every 90 days) you sit down with a coach and we assess how things are going, and plan for the next step in your journey.)

What If You Are Nervous

That is normal. We expect it. We do not throw anyone into the deep end. You start with 1 to 1 support, then you move into classes with a plan that suits you. If something does not feel right on a given day, we adjust in seconds.

Common Concerns

Will I be judged if I do easier options

No. Our culture is warm and beginner friendly. We are proud of it. Members celebrate effort and progress, not ego.

What if I have a sore shoulder or knee

We have alternatives ready for every movement. Your coach will show you what to do and how to know if it is a good option for today.

How often should I come

Three times per week is a sweet spot for most beginners. If life is hectic, two sessions per week done consistently will still move you forward. (Eventually people will move to 4-5 days if they feel ready and want to progress further.)

How We Keep You Safe

  • We teach positions before speed or load.
  • We scale range and complexity long before we remove options.
  • We encourage you to finish sessions feeling capable, not crushed.

What Results To Expect In 30 Days

  • Better energy and fewer afternoon slumps.
  • Less stiffness in hips and back thanks to better movement and light strength work.
  • Confidence that grows each session as things begin to feel familiar.
