Ethical, customer-focused Search Engine Optimisation
Search Engine Optimisation is a term used to describe the process of making amendments to a website to increase its visibility in the search engine results, and thereby increasing visitor numbers to the site. It focuses purely on the natural or ‘organic’ listings and is a long term process.
Each of the search engines have complex algorithms on which they judge the relevance and importance of websites, and serve up results to searchers based on this. They do not disclose their algorithms. There may be several hundred factors taken into consideration in an algorithm and they differ from search engine to search engine. A number 1 position on one search engine, does not automatically guarantee you a good position on another search engine. Although following good practice should ensure that you do well generally across the board.
Google Page Rank is a quality score assigned to each webpage. It too is determined by a complex algorithm, which measures popularity (inbound links). A page or site with a higher Page Rank is likely to do better in the search engines, and SEO changes to such a site will probably have a quicker impact. Sites with a low Page Rank, can engage in an inbound link or directory registration campaign to boost their page rank and help their search engine result do better in the long term.
Meta tags, Page Headings, Content, Keyword density and proximity, inbound links are some of the factors used to determine results.
Successful Search engine optimisation requires clear planning and the execution of various tasks to present your website in as favorable a position as possible. It is a long term strategy, and results are not as quick as Pay Per Click, nor indeed are they guaranteed.
